The center was established in 2013 within the Department of History of Ukrainian Literature and Shevchenko Studies. Currently, it operates within the Department of History of Ukrainian Literature, Literary Theory and Literary Creativity, Shevchenko Studies scholars (Prof. Oksana Slipushko, Prof. Yaroslava Vilna, Assistant Anna Hudyma, and others) actively contribute to the center’s work.
The initial task of the center is to popularize Taras Shevchenko and his creative legacy, as the name our University bears is not only an honor for the institution but also an honor for the Ukrainian nation, which we must present with dignity in Ukraine and across the world. The center’s activities are also aimed at formation of a Shevchenko Studies focus in literary studies, at developing and practically implementing Shevchenko-related projects (including teaching the course “Shevchenko and Kyiv University” for all students of faculties and institutes of our University, holding the All-University Competition of Scientific Papers and Essays, Creative Works “My Shevchenko”), at writing and publishing modern educational and methodological literature, at preparing for publication with scientific commentary and expert forewords scientific collections, monographs, manuals, textbooks, and at reissuing fundamental works in the relevant field.
In collaboration with the Department of History of Ukrainian Literature, Literary Theory and Literary Creativity, the сentre annually holds Shevchenko Days. These events feature the International Scientific and Practical Conference “Contemporary Shevchenko Studies: Multidisciplinary Discourses”, alongside meetings with Shevchenko Prize laureates, round table discussions, book launches, excursions to Kaniv, museum visits, and engaging interactive sessions for students. Moreover, the сentre attracts young researchers to Shevchenko Studies by hosting meetings with writers, artists, directors, publishers, and public and cultural figures, as well as by organizing pre-premiere screenings of films dedicated to Taras Shevchenko.
In 2014–2016, the center hosted the research project “The Artistic Individuality of Taras Shevchenko and the International Literary Context”. The project was led by Dr. Oksana Slipushko, Doctor of Philology, and involved Dr. Iryna Prylipko (at the time – Director of the Center), Doctor of Philology, and Anna Shapovalova, PhD in Philology.
Currently, the center is involved in the research project “Multidisciplinary Discourses of Contemporary Shevchenko Studies” (Fundamental Research 22KF044-03; Scientific Supervisor – Doctor of Philology, Professor Oksana Slipushko)
The center undertakes the editorial preparation and publication of the scholarly collection of academic papers “Shevchenko Studies” (established in 1939).
