The Center was established in 2020 through a Memorandum of Cooperation between Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv and Vytautas Magnus University in the Republic of Lithuania. This initiative received support from the Embassy of the Republic of Lithuania in Ukraine and the Ministry of Education, Science, and Sports of the Republic of Lithuania.
The goal of the Center is to strengthen bilateral relations between Lithuania and Ukraine in the humanitarian sector.
The main task of the center is to promote the study of the Lithuanian language in Ukraine, as well as to foster the popularisation of Lithuanian literature, history, culture, and art.
The center’s activities focus on developing and implementing a unique educational and professional program for higher education in Ukraine: “Polish Language and Literature, English and Lithuanian Languages.” Since 2020, the Institute of Philology has included the training of polonists with a specialization in Lithuanian as part of its curriculum. In 2021, over 40 students were enrolled in Lithuanian courses at the Institute.
The Center also coordinates international cooperation through bilateral agreements with various universities and research institutions in the Republic of Lithuania, including Vytautas Magnus University (Kaunas), Vytautas Magnus University Education Academy (Vilnius), the Institute of the Lithuanian Language (Vilnius), Klaipeda University, and Vilnius University, among others.
The Center participates in the international project “Innovations in Lithuanian Studies: From Science to Practice” and is also a partner in the project “Lithuanian Academic Scheme for International Cooperation in Baltic Studies” (02.02.2017–01.02.2023). These initiatives align with the provisions of the Operational Program of Investments of the European Union Funds for 2014–2020.
The Center provides information and organizational support to students, lecturers, and staff at the University regarding various forms of academic mobility, internships, and participation in scientific conferences and congresses. For several years, students and lecturers from the university have been involved in summer and winter courses on the Lithuanian language and culture, as well as other academic mobility programs at partner universities in Lithuania, with support from the Ministry of Education, Science, and Sports of the Republic of Lithuania.
The Center is headed by Igor Korolyov, Doctor of Philology, Professor
