In 1997, the Center for English Language and Information was established to facilitate cooperation in educational, business, and cultural activities between Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv and the British Embassy in Kyiv.
The Center is headed by Vira Orlova, Associate Professor, PhD in Philology.
The primary goal of the Center is to promote an in-depth study of the English language and the cultures of English-speaking countries. To achieve this, the Center has developed a collection of over 3,500 educational and reference books across various fields, including linguistics, literature, area studies, journalism, and medicine. The collection features both classic and contemporary works by English, American, and Canadian authors, as well as various genres of fiction. Visitors can access a selection of encyclopedias and reference materials, including the 32-volume Britannica Encyclopedia, the 21-volume World Book Encyclopedia, and the 24-volume Collier’s Encyclopedia. The Center also offers a collection of audio and video resources.
A key focus of the center is to enhance the teaching of English by young lecturers and trainees. To achieve this, employees from Longman, Pearson Education, and similar organizations conduct seminars on various aspects of teaching methodology. In 2019, the center launched an English-speaking student club.
Among the Center’s annual events are seminars on improving the methodology of teaching English, interdisciplinary scientific and practical conferences for young researchers and scientists under the slogan “Ideas worth sharing. Ideas that inspire”, presentations on contemporary dictionaries published by Macmillan, seminars focused on exam preparation, along with numerous meetings and lectures featuring English-speaking writers, educators, and translators.
