Current department was created in 2016 when the two departments — the Department of English Philology and the Department of Theory of Communication and Regional Studies – were united. Generally, the history of the Department dates back to 1965 when the Department of English Philology was established at the Faculty of Romance and Germanic Philology. Many prominent scholars, linguists, translators worked at the Department: Doctor of Philology, Professor Yuriy Zhluktenko, Professor Nataliia Raievska, Doctor of Philology, Professor Olena Starikova, Doctor of Philology, Professor Liudmila Medvedeva, Doctor of Philology, Professor, Corresponding Member of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Valeriy Akulenko, Doctor of Philology, Professor Eduard Skorokhodko.
Professor Zhluktenko initiated the research on Social Linguistics in Ukraine and supervised the research in Germanic languages. Prof.Zhluktenko, Prof. Starikova, Prof.Raievska, Prof.Medvedeva, Prof.Belova contributed to the academic school of the English language studies.
The Department of Theory of Communication and Regional Studies was set up in 1992 to meet new approached in teaching languages.
Now the staff includes three Doctors of Philology, two Professors, twenty three PhD, Associate Professors, three Assistant Professors, two secretaries.
The Department makes the priority of teaching English and lecturing Linguistics for Bachelor and Master Students of multiple education programs at the Institute of Philology. The Department teaches diverse theoretical and practical courses at the education programmes for Bachelor and Master Students – ”English Studies and Translation and Two Western European Languages”, ”English Communication Studies and Translation and Two Western European Languages”, the programs for international students ”English Studies and Two Foreign Languages”, ”English Language and Literature” and many others.
Training PhD students, doctoral students, would-be lecturers for High School of Ukraine, linguists, researchers is another important direction of work at the Department. Former post-graduate students of the Department who successfully presented their theses, PhD and Doctors of Philology, work at numerous universities throughout Ukraine, at the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. Five doctoral theses, 80 PhD theses had been supervised by Doctor of Philology, Professor Alla Belova, Doctor of Philology Natalia Neborsina, Professor Lidia Verba, Associate Professor Olha Yashenkova during the last twenty years.
The Department of English Philology conducted diverse research of the English language and communication in line with the relevant paradigms in Linguistics, in particular, Structural Linguistics, Functional-Semantic Grammar, Pragmatics, Semantics, Naming Theory, Theory of Argumentation, History of the English language, Rhetoric, Poetics, Stylistics, Cognitive Linguistics, Discourse Analysis, Multimodality.
