In the recent years, the scientific research, conducted by the Department of Foreign Languages for the Faculties of History and Philosophy, centred around Methods of Teaching Professional Foreign Languages for Specific and Academic Purposes. In the years 2023–2025, the faculty members prepared six textbooks and nine methodological complexes aimed at developing the foreign language competencies of history and philosophy students. Over the same period, the department published nine articles in scientific journals indexed in international scientometric databases such as Scopus, Web of Science, and Index Copernicus, as well as forty articles in Ukrainian academic journals of Category B.
2025 saw the first International Scientific and Practical Conference Learning Through Language: International Perspectives in Education, launched by our department. The conference focused on various aspects of foreign language learning relevant in today’s rapidly transforming world, including cutting-edge trends in language teaching, the methodology of teaching languages for specific purposes, and the development of linguistic identity. The event brought together language educators, researchers, doctoral students, and many other participants interested in foreign language learning from Ukraine, Western Europe, Turkey, India, the United States, and Canada. The organisation of this conference was made possible due to the department’s long-standing cooperation with other foreign language departments of non-linguistic faculties of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, particularly through the international online conference Philological and Pedagogical Studies in 21st Century National and International Science, which addressed the specifics of teaching professional foreign languages at non-linguistic faculties.
In 2022, our department applied to participate in the Virtual Educator project, initiated by the U.S. Embassy in Ukraine. For four years, thanks to this program, students of the Faculties of History and Philosophy have had the opportunity to take part in classes run by experienced American language educators. In addition to courses in professional English, U.S. teachers also host speaking clubs and conduct methodological seminars for the instructors of non-linguistic faculties of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv.
Another international partner of our department is the International Association for Technology, Education, and Language Studies (IATELS, Turkey). Members of the association also hold speaking clubs with students of the Faculties of History and Philosophy and participate in the international conference run by the department. In turn, Ukrainian instructors have the opportunity to attend the annual English language teaching conference organised by the association in Turkey.
In February 2026, the 6th International Conference on Language Studies, Translation and Education took place, focusing on innovations brought by artificial intelligence to foreign language learning. Faculty members of the department made presentations that addressed AI-driven personalised learning , AI for pronunciation and fluency practice, AI-asssited curriculum design, the role of AI in fostering learner autonomy, etc.
The faculty members are actively applying the findings of their research in the curriculum design and teaching of Foreign Language for Specific and Academic Purposes, and Academic Writing courses to undergraduate students (years 1–4) and doctoral students of the Faculties of History and Philosophy.
