The history of the department dates back to 1962, when the Department of English of Non-Specialized Faculties was established under the leadership of Associate Professor Z. Trostianska. Back then, the department provided English language teaching at the University’s natural sciences and humanities faculties. Ten years later, the department was reorganized, and two departments were formed: English of the Faculties of Humanities (headed by Associate Professor M. Potuzhna) and English of the Faculties of Natural Sciences (headed by Associate Professor M. Borozna). At various times, the department was headed by Associate Professor Z. Nevizhyna (1977-1982), Associate Professor P. Bekh (1982-1991), Associate Professor M. Petrovskyi (1991-1997 and 2002-2012), and Associate Professor H. Dorosh (1997-2002).
In 2012, two departments were formed based on the facility: the Department of Foreign Languages of the Faculty of Economics (headed by Associate Professor M. Petrovskyi) and the Department of Foreign Languages of the Faculties of Natural Sciences (headed by PhD in Philology, Associate Professor T. Pastushenko, who is still in charge of the department).
Today, the members of the department provide English language teaching at the Institute of Geology, the Institute of Biology and Medicine, the Institute of Public Administration and Civil Service, the Institute of High Technologies and the Faculty of Geography.
Currently, the department consists of 18 lecturers: 9 with PhD degrees and 8 with the rank of associate professor.
The department provides teaching of the General English course (for first-year students), English for Specific Purposes (for students in their second to fourth year of study), as well as the Academic Writing in English course for postgraduate and PhD students.
The department hosts interdepartmental, national and international scientific and practical seminars on relevant issues of linguistics, literary studies, pedagogy and teaching methods of foreign languages in institutions of higher education.
The department’s faculty members organize contests in English for natural science degree students.
The department’s faculty members are successfully developing 2 research topics: “Current Issues of ESP Teaching Methodology” and “Linguistic and Literary Approaches to the Study of Contemporary English Discourse”. Over the past 20 years, the members of the department have published more than 500 scientific and educational works.
Since 2019, the department has been organizing the International Scientific and Practical Conference “Philological and Pedagogical Studies in the National and Foreign Science of the XXI Century”.
