The Center for German Language and Culture was established in 2001 by the Agreement between Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv and the University of Konstanz, Germany, in order to strengthen ties of friendship between the Ukrainian and German peoples and expand academic, scientific, and cultural contacts between the countries.
The center collaborates with the Goethe-Institut in Ukraine, the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Ukraine. As part of this collaboration, the department received German language textbooks, German-language scholarly publications on translation studies, linguistics, literary studies, and fiction books. Students of the department undertake translation internships on the basis of the Center and Goethe-Institut in Ukraine (in particular, translations of articles for the Ukrainian-language page of the Goethe-Institut in Ukraine, a translation workshop for the translation of a magazine about the history of comics). The center hosts a section for the Swedish and Dutch languages and cultures, and a Ukrainian branch of the Society for the German Language (Gesellschaft für deutsche Sprache) operates there.
The Center has a library that can be used by students and lecturers of the University. Here, lecturers of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the Austrian Academic Exchange Service (OEAD) provide consultations for students on study and training issues in Germany and Austria.
The head of the Center is Mykhailo Saiko, PhD.
